Bakas ng Himagsikan
. Maynila: Limbagang Magiting ni Honorio Lopez, 1910. Pp. 1-29.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This short novel depicts the heroism of Filipino revolutionaries. The central characters are Delfin and Pilar, a married couple who don the uniform of the katipuneros to fight during the Filipino-Spanish War. When Delfin dies during an encounter, Pilar takes over as the group's leader and continues with the fight. But the struggle is not about to end with the defeat of the Spaniards. With the arrival of the Americans, Pilar leads her men and fearlessly confronts the American soldiers led by General Lawton. On their tombs are engraved the words:
"
Here lies two children of Mother Country--Pilar Makabayan and Delfin Santos.
"
INTRODUCTORY NOTE: This text is notable for its depiction of a woman not only as an ordinary soldier but as a leader of the revolutionary soldiers. It would be interesting to find out the possible source of Pilar Makabayan in real life, apart from the famous historical figure of Gabriela Silang who, together with her husband Diego Silang, fought the Spaniards during the colonial regime.
