PANGKALAHATANG BUOD: Masasabing nabahiran ito ng Camille ni Alexander Dumas sa paggamit ng motif na “masamang babae na may ginintuang puso.” Isa ang Busabos ng Palad sa maraming nobelang Tagalog na kumiling sa “masamang babae.” Gayunman, ito marahil ang pinakamabigat na sakdal sa mga institusyong sinisiraan ang gayong uri ng babae. Umiinog ang istorya kay Celso, ang manunulat na nagligtas sa isang babaeng nagtatrabaho sa bahay-aliwan upang mabayaran ang pagkakautang. Si Rita, ang masamang babae, ang kaniya palang kasintahan na lihim na naglaho dalawang taon na ang nakararaan. Ang kaniyang buhay ay hitik sa pagtataksil, pandarahas na sekswal, at paninira ng ipokritong lipunan. Tinalikdan ng kaniyang mga magulang at kaibigan, pinili ni Celso si Rita. Ngunit panandalian lamang ang kanilang pagsasama. Nagkasakit si Rita, at habang nasa tabi niya ang paring nagbibigay ng pangwakas na sakramento, ibinulalas ni Rita ang kaniyang poot at inakusahan ng kalupitan at kawalang-katarungan ang lipunan. Nang mamatay si Rita, nabaliw si Celso at dinala sa asilo.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Largely influenced by the celebrated French novel Camille by Alexander Dumas in its use of the motif of "the prostitute with the golden heart", Busabos ng Palad is only one of the numerous Tagalog novels that took up the cudgels for the "fallen woman." Yet, it is probably the most powerful indictment of institutions that demonize this type of woman. The novel revolves around Celso, a writer, who saves a woman working in one of Manila's brothels by paying off her debt.. Rita, the prostitute, turns out to be his sweetheart who mysteriously disappeared two years ago. Hers was a tale of betrayal, systematic sexual exploitation and abject humiliation by hypocritical society. Spurned by his parents and friends, Celso chooses to live with Rita. But this togetherness is short-lived. Rita gets sick and while a priest tries to minister to the dying woman, she releases her anger and accuses society of cruelty and injustice. After Rita dies, Celso loses his mind and is confined to an asylum.

PAMBUNGAD NA TALA: Hindi lamang si Faustino Aguilar ang sumulat sa ganitong tema. Ang iba pang nobelista’y nakisimpatya’t pumanig din sa mga masamang babae. Kabilang dito sina Iñigo Ed. Regalado, Juan Arsciwals, Ruperto Cristobal, Antonio Sempio, at iba pa. Nang dumating ang mga Amerikano sa Filipinas, dumami ang “kabaret,” “salon,” at “kasa” na pawang nagseserbisyo sa kalalakihan, lalo doon sa lungsod.

INTRODUCTORY NOTE:It was not only Faustino Aguilar who worked on this popular motif. Other novelists treated this type with sympathy and compassion. Among them were Iñigo Ed. Regalado, Juan Arsciwals, Ruperto Cristobal, Antonio Sempio, among others. It is fair to argue that with the coming of the Americans, the institution of the "kabaret," "dancing hall," and other establishments that catered to men and their pleasure grew in popularity, especially in the cities.
